- NHeLP highlighted in Democrats Offer Brief in DRA Suit (Roll Call, May 11, 2006).
- NHeLP received an official recognition award in April 2006 from the Mississippi Center for Justice (MCJ) for ongoing attention to the needs of poor people in Mississippi. Martha Bergmark, MCJ President, recognized NHeLP for work in the Vinson case which successfully challenged Mississippi's attempt to terminate the Medicaid benefits of almost 50,000 elderly and disabled Medicaid recipients and the current Denning case which challenges the states hard cap of 5 prescriptions per month, no matter how many a person needs. A MCJ newsletter highlighted the federal lawsuit challenging stringent new limit's on Mississippi's prescription benefit.
- NHeLP was named Pharmacy Access Partner of the Month for January 2006 by the Pharmacy Access Partnership along with other groups for efforts to successfully advance and pass the American Public Health Association (APHA) resolution to protect access to Emergency Contraception and other contraceptive services in pharmacies. Lourdes Rivera, NHeLP Staff Attorney, was the official policy author and received a Pharmacy Access Partner Certificate of Appreciation for her valuable contributions.
2005
- Manjusha Kulkarni, NHeLP Staff Attorney, received the Public Interest Service Award from the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California in 2005 for devoting her time and energy to helping the community, and to serving as a role model for law students and young attorneys pursuing careers in public interest law.
- Jane Perkins, NHeLP's Legal Director, was named by LawDragon Magazine as one of the top 500 lawyers in the US in October 2005.
- Lourdes Rivera, NHeLP Staff Attorney, was named as a Commissioner to the Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women by Mayor Villaraigosa in September 2005.
- Steve Hitov, NHeLP Managing Attorney, quoted in Missouri's Medicaid Shame: Myth and Fraud (St. Louis Post Dispatch, April 17, 2005).
- In August 2005, Lourdes Rivera, NHeLP Staff Attorney, was presented the Committee Excellence Award by the American Bar Association's Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section for her work on a resolution to protect patients' right to informed consent in face of religious restrictions, adopted by the ABA's House of Delegates in February 2005.
- The Health Consumer Alliance highlighted in Health Rights Defenders, Nine Health Consumer Centers in California help people get the health care they need (Children's Advocate, May/June 2005). NHeLP is HCA's lead agency.
- In May 2005 Lourdes Rivera, NHeLP Staff Attorney, was honored by the Reproductive Rights Project of the New York Civil Liberties Union for leadership, integrity, and commitment to expanding access to reproductive rights.
- NHeLP's work highlighted in Of Service - National Health Law Program protects health care for the poor (The (Baltimore) Daily Record, April 15, 2005).
- The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services presented the Health Consumer Alliance with the Year 2001 Beneficiary Services Award of Merit, recognizing HCA as one of the country's outstanding organizations helping low-income, elderly and disabled health consumers. NHeLP is HCA's lead agency. CMS is the federal agency that runs Medicare, Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program.
