St. Vincents' Agreement with Attorney General re Language Assistance (Aug. '06)

There was a resolution agreement signed on August 8th, 2006 between St Vincents Catholic Medical Center (SVCMC), in Staten Island, and the New York Attorney General.  It was filed in the SVCMC's bankruptcy case and outlines the steps that SVCMC will take to provide language interpretation and translation services for its limited-English-proficient patients.  The Attorney General began an investigation of SVCMC in response to a civil rights complaint by the Latin American Integration Center, New York Immigration Coalition, Legal Aid Society, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, Korean Community Services, and Make the Road By Walking.  The complaint resulted from the hospital's failure to take meaningful action to address medical harm, quality of care issues, and descrimination that were documented over a two year period by the Latin American Integration Center, which serves the Spanish-speaking community on Staten Island.  Overall, the hospital has agreed to implement a comprehensive set of language assistance practices.
